MEDIEVAL CITY OF RHODES - GREECE

The Medieval City of Rhodes was formed amongst the templates of Medieval cities that were created in the 14th and 15th century, which also presented noteworthy similarities. The old city of Rodos is encircled by strong mediaeval walls a typical example of the techniques of the fortification of the 14th -15th century built by the Knights of Saint John,to protect the city from all dangers, whether comming from land or sea. With the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Great Hospital and the Street of the Knights, the Upper Town is one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period. In the Lower Town, Gothic architecture coexists with mosques, public baths and other buildings dating from the Ottoman period. Thus, the existing walls were not demolished; they were merely transformed and continuously supported (by increasing the width of the walls).
