OVIEDO CHURCHES - SPAIN

Oviedo is the home of the most important pre-romanesque monuments in all of Spain: Santa Maria del Naranco (part of palace, later turned to a church), on the southerrn slope of the mountain of Naranco , San Miguel del Lillo, a church a little above on the same slope .King Ramiro I constructed a number of buildings and only two of them remain. They are set majestically on the Naranco hillside and can be reached easily by foot as they are only about 4 km from the city center following la Avenida de los Monumentos. These surprisingly well-preserved buildings were built during the 9th century and have served as everything from churches to royal getaways.
