ALCOBACA MONASTERY - PORTUGAL

The Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça, north of Lisbon, was founded in 1153 by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques. At its height, it could house 999 monks, with one place reserved for the king, who lodged with the monks while traveling in that region.
